Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise helped her develop a love for art and creativity. Her aunt worked the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. Though DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she always spent summers with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father recalled the Civil Rights marches that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. Her time in Selma would later inspire her to direct a movie that focused on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. After graduating she attended in the University of California Los Angeles where she earned certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in television journalism during her time as a college student. She started as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to examine the garbage in the house that belonged to a member of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism duties, and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a PR professional in a small production studio right after graduating from college. In 1999, she launched her own private company for public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Aside from PR, her agency also established a range of promotions and lifestyle networks like The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
