Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of the arts by her aunt Denise as a young child. The aunt was on the night shift as a nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for theater and art during the day. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother who was a social conscience, and encouraged DuVernay to be creative and express herself through art. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where DuVernay's father was born and raised. Her father, who was DuVernay's dad, reminisced historical civil rights marches across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to direct a movie that focused on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay was awarded her graduation certificate in Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She then attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was working as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being asked examine the garbage inside the home of one of the jury. The jury member was unhappy with her journalism duties, and decided that she would switch to the business of public relations. DuVernay began her career working as a junior press assistant at a tiny film studio following her graduation from college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her agency for public relations, in the year 1999. Additionally, she launched several lifestyle networks and promotions, such as Urban Beauty Collective.
